I would interview/speak with a few Brokers, A few things to consider is how the office does business, their expectations, cost/charges to you (desk fees, marketing, etc...). Bottom line is The Brokers support and professionalism is what to look for and follow your gut. Run if the first thing asked to do are; cold calls, expired listings, FSBO's (For Sale By Owner) or door knocking. Don't just assume because it is nation wide broker that they're good. Interviewing is a two way street, as you will be an entrepreneur (stick with that mind set and you will be fine). If you want to Prudential has some of the best training, the only down fall is they are very corporate type structured, so if your are a good self starter and work well once your trained you could then switch to another broker and kick butt. In this Business always keep your integrity intact as that’s everything. Good Luck even thou it is not really part of it :)

Live in Berkeley, work in San Francisco?
I am moving to the Bay Area to work next summer. I am fresh out of college and from Illinois. I was wondering if it would be more economical to live somewhere else, such as Berkeley. I will be working right in the Embarcadero Center so I could easily take the BART. Anyone have any insight as to how it is to live in Berkeley? Or other ideas? It would definitely be more cost-effective to live in Berkeley or other city along the BART line. You might even consider going further inland to Walnut Creek or Pleasanton, although the auto traffic along that corridor can be hellish.

I live all the way out at the end of one of the BART lines and can say it's definitely the way to go, rather than fighting an hour and a half of traffic each direction. Unfortunately, the areas between SF and Walnut Creek (and in Marin and on the peninsula) are pretty expensive to live in. Many people are buying out beyond the end of the lines and driving to BART to afford it. If you're single and can afford to live in Berkeley it's a great way to go. But if you need a home and good schools you'll have to look further out. Good luck!

You might want to try the Rockridge area of Oakland rather than Berkeley. It has alot going on without the crazys of Berkeley.

Berkeley isnt cheap either. You are very lucky to have your job since there are so few jobs exactly right in SF. Check out www.baysidevillage.com and you can walk to work. Bart fares are expensive. Plus the Berkeley Bart station is near UC campus and you probably have had enough campus life.

As previously noted, Berkeley is not inexpensive either. You have to weigh in the pros & cons of cheaper vs. commute. I would recommend living in SF if possible.

Yes you can live elsewhere to save money if that's what you want to do. But the city can be a very fun place to live, especially right out of college if your job pays well enough. Live like a 40-year old when you are 40. For now, have a fun singles lifestyles in The City.

Berkeley is a lovely town, and as you already know, it's an easy commute to San Francisco via BART. There's a BART station right near Telegraph Avenue, which is one of the best parts of town. That said, Berkeley is very expensive in its own right, as previous respondents have indicated. My strategy would be this: Look for an apartment/house based on price FIRST, then location second. San Francisco is the second most expensive housing market in the U.S. (right behind New York City), but comparable bargains can still be found. Try looking in the Richmond District of San Francisco; it's considered a remote quadrant by native SF-ers, but it's a positively gorgeous location (adjacent to Baker Beach and Land's End), and the rents are much cheaper than other parts of the city. If you don't find the price you're looking for in San Francisco, expand your search along transit lines, but don't limit yourself to BART -- the Caltrain runs south out of San Francisco, and it a very pleasant way to commute. It's a double-decker train, and I've taken it many times and found it to be one of the most hassle-free train experiences in the country. If you look at "CalTrain" towns like Burlingame, San Mateo and the like, you'll eventually find a place that meets your requirements. All it takes is determination, a bit of luck, and perserverance. With BART, you can get almost anywhere in San Francisco quickly. For this reason, you could live in Alameda (access to San Francisco through Fruitvale stop) Oakland (though some parts are rougher than others), Berkeley (though many parts are expensive), San Leandro, El Cerrito, Hayward, or Castro Valley (Richmond, Fremont, Orinda, Dublin/Pleasanton, Concord, Walnut Creek, and Pleasanton are all on BART routes but they may take slightly longer than half an hour to get into the city) in the East Bay, and Daly City, San Bruno, or Milbrae in the Peninsula (although service to the latter two stops after 7pm). Some cities, like Alameda in the East Bay, Vallejo in the North Bay, and Larkspur in Marin, also have ferry commute services, although sometimes ferries take longer than BART does.

It depends on how much you want to spend to rent. and what times you work. 30 minutes in traffic getting to the city is not that far out of san francisco. Bay area traffic during rush hour times 6-9am 3-7 pm is like LA traffic. Especially if you crossing one of the 8 bridges. I would recommend San Mateo, Daly City which is around 30 minutes south of the city or in a nicer area Belmont or Palo Alto (Not East Palo Alto) that is around 45 minutes to an hour. If your looking on the east bay where its a little cheaper to live but you get what you pay for, a 30 minute commute would be Oakland or Berkley. Your going to spend 30 minutes alone just crossing the bay bridge to get into the city. If your looking North then Marin, or Sausalito is 30-45 minutes. You spend most of the time on the bridge again (the golden gate) and getting into the city through the outside streets. And remember there are no freeways in San Francisco. All the freeways in the bay area end in San Francisco or run around the city. Its exactly like New York City so its gridlocked on the roads during rush hour and weekends.

Manpower, Western and Kelly are all pretty good about getting temp jobs.. call for when you can get an interview. You can usually stop by and get the application ahead of time and then your interviewed and tested on various computer programs and it usually includes an English test along with a regular interview

The only thing i can tell u is... If ur trying to SAVE money, then SF really isn't a good place to go. Everything is expensive here, especially gas and grocery's. Its getting close to 5 dollars a gallon here in SF, and food is really expensive if u go to Safeway, but cheap if you go to a place like Foods Co. and sometimes Cala Foods.... Also.... it costs especially a lot of money to buy or rent a house or apartment... so i don't think u will have the best luck here when looking to save money. however, SF would definitely be good if u like art. I used to hate it here, but as i continue growing, San Francisco has definitely made an impact on my artistic views and skills.. It has a way of inspiring... wish u luck and hope i helped at least a little... _chelsea_

With Silicon Valley nearby, it is tech gadget heaven as well. Wages are generally high, but the job market is very competitive. It is also the second most expensive city in the nation. You come to San Francisco to spend money rather than save it. - Compared to Philedelphia, Pittsburgh is a bit of a cultural wasteland. It has a symphony, opera, ballet, and so forth. But the quality isn't quite upto the level you'd get in either DC or San Francisco. With the decline in manufacturing jobs, work is also harder to come by here. However, it is the most affordable of the three sites you've selected. - Washington DC is the nation's capital, so it has many museums and galleries. The scope is very impressive (everything is on a monumental scale). Historic sites in Virginia and Maryland are next door. But DC isn't particularly innovative. You get a lot of patriotic and mannerist art, as federal politicians tend to have questionable taste. DC's government dependent economy doesn't pay as much as the private sector. However, government health and retirement benefits are usually excellent. DC isn't as cheap as Pittsburgh, but it is not as costly as San Francisco either. ---- Under the circumstances, I'd say compromise might be advisable. Perhaps DC would provide you with a decent balance of what you're looking for.

Depends on what work you do. If you're in a business position, probably a suit and tie, real basic business attire. Although some places allow business folks to wear business casual if you don't have to see clients or otherwise represent the company to the outside world. Most tech places are more flexible and self-expressive. As far as keeping warm in winter, just wear stuff you can shed when you get to work (vest or sweater), scarf, trenchcoat, umbrella, gloves if it gets real cold.

Check the paper adverts online in the city you want to look for a job in.

Unfortunately your best bet is going to be to move there first and then start looking on the local papers (which are probably on-line). Most employers are not willing to pay relocation costs for someone to move and are hesitant to consider someone who is currently living out of state. The time and issues for people to move across country are a dis-incentive for a prospective employer when hiring a new person. (time off to move in, meet with movers, turn on utilities, close on a house or apartment)

try hot jobs, craigs list or check the ads in the SF papers. If you have any companies that you are interested in, check their web sites for job openings. You probably wont get anyone to pay relocation and you will have to add to your cover letter that you will be moving there and will be available to interview on a particular date.

I'd tell you that these employers are probably looking at the address on your resume and wondering how much of an inconvenience it would be for you to get there. Unless they are paying for relocation, most employers shy away from long-distant job hunters, even if these job seekers attempt to "justify" that they are funding their own relocation. Try writing at the bottom of your resume that you're paying for your own moving expenses and see how that goes. If that's not successful, you might have to get someone's address there and use it to get the job or just move there and job hunt while you are there. Relocation can be challenging, do your homework before you decide to pack and move.

what type of work? where in san francisco? in SF? or the bay area in general? age and marital status has nothing to do with employment. you being a student may limit your work hours/location because of your school commitment. but as a student you can look for co-op or internship positions which companies like to hire and train. try hotjob.com, monster.com or careerbuilder.com. also craigslist.org too. good luck with your job search!

I would suggest marketing yourself directly to ALL researched organizations in SANFRAN, staffing/consulting/outsource firms with recent placements in SANFRAN, outsource agencies in Taiwan, or global and domestic (US) firms with a presence in SANFRAN. Also, I wouldn't limit myself to a construction specific position, as your management and education terms are transferable to any industry with the correct marketing approach. i would suggest the library rather than a bookstore. the sf main library at 100 larkin street is huge. there are study rooms on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floor.
