Canadian citizen want to work in San Francisco?
Hi, I am from Toronto, Canada and will be graduating soon with an Engineering degree with Canadian experience in the software industry. I want to move to San Francisco, and was wondering what is involved in acquiring a work visa. I am also wondering what the demand for software/systems engineers in San Francisco are and whether companies are likely to hire Canadians. Also, would an entry level software engineer be able to sustain a living in or around the bay area?

Wages are extremely high in San Francisco: http://www.indeed.com/salary?q1=Front-end+Software+Engineer+(AJAX)&l1=San+Francisco%2C+CA However, the job market is also highly competitive. And unlike in other parts of America, a formal education is essential in Northern California. Canadian university degrees are generally well regarded though. Your employer will handle the arrangements for a work visa. If you enter the United States as a tourist (on the 90 day visa waiver scheme) to look for a job, do not tell the immigration officer that you're seeking employment. Once you secure a job offer, you might have to return to Canada briefly... and then re-enter the United States with your work visa in hand. The easiest way to do this is via British Columbia. There are direct flights to San Francisco from Vancouver and Victoria
