Do I need a car if I live in daly city and work in san francisco?
Im moving to San Francisco and im thinking if I should bring my car with me. Please advise on other cities in the SF bay area where a car is needed or not. thanks. I am thinking about moving to the bay area and ultimately find a hospital job in SF. Please advise on a neighboring city that is a decent commute and wether a car is needed or not at all, (I have daly city on top of my list). Thanks.

BART does travel from daly city to sf. But it depends on how far you live from it. If you work in the city, you will want to take public transportation, unless your office building has free parking (which it will not). Parking in SF sucks! However, I would have a car if you plan to go anywhere else. There are fantastic sights to see all over SF and CA. If I were you, I would keep the car at your house, and use it for non-work/non-downtown things. Like Tahoe, Monterey, San Diego, etc., etc., etc. Also, many executive jobs in SF require you to network at places/meetings throughout the Bay Area, including the East Bay. BART is a great resource, but I would want a car if I ever planned to leave downtown SF. You can live without a car in any city in the Bay Area that has BART. Also, there are buses, trolley cars in SF, and the bay ferries. Bikes, feet. However, if you plan to venture out, you'll need a car. check out the bart map... www.BART.gov

There is pretty good transportion in the city, and communites close to San Francisco. The real problem with driving your own car is that parking is extremely limited and VERY expensive, especially if you commute every day and stay for several hours. Research the bus, train and light rail lines before you move. (Samtrans, CalTrain, SFMuni, BART) If you manage to locate your home near one of these lines and work reasonably close to one, you'll be much happier taking public trans. Many people take a combination of public transportation and bicycle.

So you want to work in SF but not live there, eh? So you're considering Daly City, eh? Has anyone told you about the fog? Do you like the fog? You must really like the fog to live there! Daly City has a respectable transit system with BART train service and SamTrans bus service. However, Daly City itself has a mid-century car-oriented flavor to it. That means you can live okay without a car, but life would be easier with one. If you don't want a car and are feeling flexible about locale, I suggest looking to Oakland or Berkeley. Both cities were developed prior to WWII, which means that, unlike Daly City, it is *very* easy to walk, bike, or take public transit everywhere! BART trains operate in both cities, and AC Transit is the bus operator there. Other perks of living in Oakland or Berkeley include nicer weather, respectable rental prices, and a vast array of bus and train lines connecting EVERY neighborhood in both cities directly to San Francisco. That's something that can't be said about Daly City! Good luck.
